silent movies. In 1915, ten years after a
serious injury, her right leg was amputated

wheelchair for several months. Nevertheless, she continued to act,
using a wooden prosthetic limb.

Master's degree in education and government from Harvard and a law

Harvard Law School. In 1983 she was the first woman
to hold the position of Secretary of

Reagan's cabinet. In 1991 Ms. Dole become the second woman
since
founder Clara Barton to serve as President of the American Red
Cross. Her husband
long term senator from Kansas and former
presidential candidate Robert Dole was twice
wounded during World
War II and lost the use of one arm. Today, Mr. Dole often carries
a
pen
in the hand of his paralyzed right arm as a signal that he is
incapable of shaking hands with

academy award winning actress. In 1965 she suffered cerebral
aneurysms
while pregnant and was in a coma for three weeks. She subsequently
relearned to
walk and talk. In 1978 the Fort Sanders Regional
Medical Center in Knoxville dedicated the
Patricia Neal Rehabilitation
Center in her honor. In 1988 Ms. Neal published an autobiography
titled
